With spring here, my family is getting our garden preped for planting. I can't tell you how excited I am for fresh veggies right out of the garden!! Today's Fab Five is about all of the yummy things I will have to eat come fall.
1 - SQUASH! I know that a lot of people don't like squash, and I think that they are nuts, bonkers, bananas!!! Dr. Oz says that you should have as many colors as possible to eat throughout the day, and squash is such a pretty color!!
2 - Apples! I know that, as a technicality, this doesn't count because it's not something you grow in the garden. We have a grove of 6 or 7 apple trees, and they are just delicious!! Because they grow at the same time(ish), I am using what I have!
3 - Cantaloupe! Yummy YUMMY! We never have a ton of luck with it, but I am hopeful this year!! Who doesn't like a nice ripe cantaloupe!
4 - Peppers and onions! This year, I worked hard to branch out and try new things, onions and peppers were some of those things that I decided I actually do like. However, I still attribute part of it to my "maturing taste buds" as my mother would say. I am really excited for cooking with fresh ingredients.
5 - Spices! Chives, rosemary, and spearmint are the 3 we're trying to grow this year. We had chives at my old house and I can't tell you how much I miss them. Just like peppers and onions, I can't wait to cook with fresh spices!! Beats using spices that have been in jars for YEARS!
Going to the farmer's market is on my to do list and I can't wait for their fresh foods as well. The vegetables that don't grow well in our gardens (pumpkins, sweet corn, peaches, and peas). I am also really excited for going to a strawberry farm and making fresh jam with my boyfriend's mom, Karen, and his grandmother. Summer comes with all sorts of delicious possibilities!! Take your time this year to enjoy them!
When are you excited for this year?? Are you plantinga garden?
